Part 1: Assemble the Table

For this project, we will be building a robot to complete challenges on a space-themed challenge table.  However, before we get to that, we need to put together the space-themed challenge table for the robot to operate on.  All of the LEGOs needed for this table are shipped in numbered bags, unassembled.  It's up to us to put them together, and we'll be working in pairs to build the challenges, called mission models.  Can we do it?

Here's what you need to know:
  • The instructions for building the mission models can be found in a program called Mindstorms EV3.  Mindstorms EV3 requires us to run a whole separate operating system (Windows XP), in what's called a Virtual Machine.  On your desktop, double-click on "Windows XP," and your screen will turn black.  It looks like it's turning on all over again, and that's kind of exactly what it's doing.  Give it time to load.  When the Virtual Machine (VM) is done loading, your desktop will look like this:
  • On the left side of your screen, you will see the   icon for Mindstorms EV3.  Double click to open it.
  • In the Mindstorms EV3 window, click on the box on the left side that says "Space Challenge."  Then, in the next column, click on "Challenge Building Instructions."  In the middle, you will see the list of Mission Models that need to get built.  Find your mission model, then click "Open."

  • The instructions will open.  For each step, you will see the pieces that you will need in a box on the left side, and then a visual of how to put them together in the middle or the right side.  On the first page of instructions, you will also need which numbered bags you will need, and how many bags you should have.  At the bottom, you will see what page you are on, and how many pages of instructions there are.  Double click on your page number, and you can type a page number to fast forward somewhere else.

  • Follow the instructions until you have finished building your mission models.  When you're finished, we'll stick them to the table, and more on to Part 2!
